the first step is to take the ink pot assembly away from its rest position, to do this power the machine up, then press the paper button once, in this image work start, the ink will move to the left, marked here work posission, at this immediate point, you must remove the power connection to remove power, leaving the ink unit in this approximate position, now you can un-hook the belt from the pulley on the right hand side, to proceed you need to look at the other images here, in order to remove the slide rod assembly,

before you can remove the ink assembly unit, you need to be able to draw out the rod on which the unit slides back or forth, in this image, FIG3A first remove the spring, marked here, use of pointy tip pliers is useful, next the blue lever can easy be removed by expand two clip-ons, on the inside of the frame, you have to line these up to extricate the lever, unhook it from the drive shaft lever, take care of both parts, next, remove the screw shown here, take care to not loose it, with the other bits, next step is to gently ease the lever outwards slightly so you can slowly lower the lever, in the downwards direction, at the same time pull outwards so when the latch lines up, the shaft will easy drop out at the left, now see FIG 2A, draw the rod right out, now the ink unit is free, to lift out, take care to NOT remove either the belt, or the data strip cable at this point on,

in this image, FIG 3C, shows the ink unit jets plate, this has been cleaned but yours will be well dirty, note here the color and black jets are at these positions, ready to be cleaned, it is important to NOT remove the cartridges at any point during this procedure, next step is to do a heavy clean, to do this all you need is a cereal bowl plastic is probably best, boil the kettle, about 2 cups, next step is put about 2 to 3 centimeter depth of boiling water into the dish, place this on tissue paper directly in the front of the printer, turn the head over to face down, and dip into the boiling water, for some minutes, much ink should purge from the jets, do not panic, but do not splash about, after some minutes in the very hot water, have a fist full of dry tissue in one hand, lift the head clear, then carefully mop away the water, as quickly as you can, polishing the head jet plate gently to remove any muck or ink etc, in this image NOTE the “polish pad” which will have fell away, during remove of the slide rod, so, before you proceed to reassembly, put a bit of greas paste on the clean side of the pad, push firmly into position, so when you insert the rod it doesn’t fall out, your now ready to start putting it back together, so now look at FIG2 A, carefully put the unit back making sure it sits on the slide rail at the top,FIG6 A, this is important, or the rod will not correctly line up on reinsertion, line up the rod connection point at the left, the white rod lever, has spigots that have to line up, it should easy snap back into place as it does so, lift the lever so its locked in, hook the belt back to the pulley on the right, you can now slide the unit back or forth very easy, next step is to line up the rod lever, put its screw back in place, hook the blue lever back up, and push back home to its correct clip point, the hard bit is now to put the spring back, but I found, if I eased the lower clip out a bit so to get the pliers and carefully put the spring back into the little hole at the bottom, once in place, the lever should be set in the lower position, slide the unit over to the left, now apply power, and wait, the unit will fire up, into head clean operation, wait for this to complete, then open printer utilites, and do a head clean process, with printout, you may have to do this a few time, but with each clean, the printout should eventually be at full ink flow, both color and black, avoid the use of switch cleaners they have no effect,
I had a serious problem on a 400 series unit, but removed a good unit from a 460 series machine, and did a full swap over, the data cable is not hard to remove, but much care is needed to carefully insert it in this case, but proved easy enough, this machine now works as good as new,
